A Paper Corsage for the Bride

I decided that I wanted to make Christi some kind of paper corsage for her to wear at her shower.  I did some searching online and found a pattern for some paper roses at Canon’s Creative Park website.  I think it turned out pretty well!

Here’s a picture of Christi (in the center, wearing the corsage) with her future mother- and sister-in-law.

I found the directions provided with the pattern for this project a little lacking, so I went ahead and made a tutorial so you can make it yourself!  This project would be easily adaptable to use as a gift topper, table decoration, anything!  If you decide to make it, please take a picture of it and post on the comments – I’d love to see it!

The Design Process

Have you ever been completely stuck trying to design a new card? I sure have. I spent two whole days last week staring at this card I was trying to make. I just didn’t like the way it was turning out, but couldn’t for the life of me figure out what to change. It was so frustrating! It was a Valentine’s Day card to bring with me as a make-n-take at the next craft day get-together with my girlfriends. I wanted to use some unconventional valentine colors, so I decided to go with mint green and chocolate brown and call it my Mint Chocolate Chip Valentine. I also knew that I really wanted to show off my new Big Shot die-cutter machine and it’s awesome embossing ability. So I found the cardstock colors I wanted to use, and I also discovered that I had just the right matching shade of mint green grosgrain ribbon. Fantastic! Well, this is what I came up with as my first version.

Mint Chocolate Chip Valentine version 1

It’s not that bad, it just didn’t look the way I wanted it to. I realized I had to let go of the mint green ribbon, even though it matched perfectly. It just wasn’t working because I wanted to stamp my sentiment on it, but it kept coming out blurry. So I had to let go of it and just use a strip of cardstock instead. But that wasn’t enough to make the design work, so I finally decided to just try reversing everything about the design – and voila! Perfect!

Mint Chocolate Chip Valentine final version

As a designer I think I get attached to using certain embellishments sometimes, and that can hold me back. So the next time you’re stuck on a design, ask yourself if there is a piece that isn’t working but that you’re still holding on to for some reason. And just try reversing each part of your design – you might be surprised!

Chalks and Heat Embossing Project

Words of Encouragement card

Here’s a new project that uses chalks and heat embossing to create a really nice card. If you’ve never done heat embossing before this is a great tutorial, and will walk you through it step by step. This project is also a great intro to using chalks. You can do more with chalks than just shading and coloring in images! (click on the picture to get the instructions)

Christi’s Wedding Invitations

Christi's Wedding Invitations

They’re done! I have to say that my sister-in-law Christi is a great bride to work with – very easy to please! She chose pretty much everything, including the double heart image as a theme. A double heart stamp was hard to find, and I ended up having to special order this Inkadinkado set of three stamps from my favorite rubber stamp store, Stamp On It – Thanks Deb!

The invitations are a single-card style, with the text printed on white cardstock using ALS Script and Adine Kirnberg Script downloaded from 1001 Free Fonts. The text cards were then layered on Pear and Juneberry textured cardstock by Bazzill Basics. The edges of the Juneberry cardstock are distressed, for which I used my Dremel tool. It’s a nice handy-man’s type multi-purpose tool, and it makes very quick work of distressing paper with it’s sanding bits. (But be warned: the dust will fly!)

The double heart image is heat embossed at the top using PearLustre Hessonite opaque embossing powder by Stampendous, and is stamped at the bottom in Brilliance Platinum Planet ink by Tsukineko. In the picture you can’t see the image stamped at the bottom, but it is there. The Brilliance Platinum Planet ink creates a faint shimmery shadow of an image when stamped on white paper. It’s a very nice effect.

I also made reception cards and RSVP cards. Christi's wedding reception cards Christi's wedding RSVP cards
The reception cards have the double heart image stamped on them in Ancient Page Plum Wine ink by Clearsnap, and they also have distressed edges.

All in all, I think this makes for a very nice set of wedding stationery – simple, yet elegant. Thanks to Christi and Artur, and everyone who helped me make them!

Trendy note card gift set

Here is the first set of note card designs I’ve made for Christmas gifts this year. I wanted to create something trendy, so I used the hot colors right now – black and white – and added a little “bling” with some peel and stick rhinestones.

Paper Piecing

I made this card for a friend who was going through a tough time. It’s the first time I tried making my own template for paper piecing, and I really like the way it turned out! For those of you unfamiliar with paper piecing, it is a technique in which you cut different colored paper and layer them together to make images. The lighthouse was really simple to make, but I can’t wait to try my hand at more difficult designs!

Changes are coming! But for now…

Dear Readers:

I’m so sorry I haven’t posted anything in the last month! Things got a little crazy for me as I decided to quit my job, and my husband and I also decided to try hosting our own blogs. So I will soon be directing you to a new site, but for now I wanted to get another post up about something new I just tried.

As a crafter, I am constantly seeing new exciting tools and products that I feel I absolutely have to have! The problem is that those new things often end up in a drawer somewhere, forgotten when the next best thing comes along. Well, I recently challenged myself to dig to the bottom of my drawers to find something I’ve never used – and to use it! What I found is this great product called Cow of Many Colors embossing powder. I bought it at the Auntie Amy rubber stamping convention last year from a vendor called CowTown Stamps. It’s an embossing powder that changes color the longer you heat it with your heat gun. It starts out as a purple/blue, then turns green, then yellow, then finally turns to orange. I thought it would be perfect for my sun image stamp. What do you think?Cow of Many Colors card

Monica’s wedding cards

My sister-in-law’s sister, Monica, is getting married! She’s having a small wedding in Las Vegas at Cesar’s Palace, and the casino wanted to charge her a fortune for the table centerpieces they offer. So we decided to make cards to set at each person’s plate to serve as centerpieces, and Monica and her fiance will write a personal thank you in the cards to each guest for coming out to Vegas for the wedding. I designed them using Monica’s wedding colors: black, white, and pink. Then we all got together and had a card making party. They turned out great!
